Inheritance
Human intelligence does not develop in isolation. Each generation inherits the language, knowledge, institutions, traditions, and judgments of those who came before it. Through this inheritance, human beings are able to build upon experiences far beyond their own lifetimes.
Culture makes this possible.
Lithuania
For Lithuania, the preservation of cultural memory has repeatedly been a matter of national survival. Across centuries of foreign rule, the suppression of language, occupation, and displacement, Lithuanians sustained their identity through books, schools, churches, families, and institutions built by their own communities.
The Lithuanian diaspora became an essential part of that continuity, preserving and developing cultural, intellectual, and religious life beyond the borders of the Lithuanian state.
The Foundation
Žiburio Foundation exists to ensure that this inheritance remains accessible, intelligible, and alive for future generations.
We preserve original sources, connect dispersed collections, support historical research, and develop new ways to study and transmit cultural memory. Our work brings together archival preservation, education, historical scholarship, and emerging technologies.
The Foundation's public-interest work is to preserve cultural materials with their provenance and context, enable legitimate community participation, develop youth formation and historical inquiry, and support research and public access consistent with rights and institutional obligations. It supports the people and institutions through whom cultural memory remains accountable and alive.
But the purpose is not simply to preserve more information.
It is to preserve the human capacity to understand, interpret, and carry forward what has been inherited.
Paveldas
Tautos atmintis buvo nešama. Rankomis.
An archive can preserve a document. It cannot, by itself, preserve the language needed to read it, the historical context needed to understand it, or the institutions and relationships that once gave it meaning.
These must also be transmitted.
Žiburio Foundation approaches cultural memory as a living inheritance: a body of knowledge, experience, language, faith, and institutional life accumulated across generations.
We work to preserve both the historical record and the human capacity to engage with it.
This means connecting sources that have become dispersed, making historical evidence accessible for research and education, and preparing young people to assume responsibility for the cultural inheritance they receive.
Cultures do not consist of everything people produce. They also consist of what people deliberately preserve, repeat, teach, honor, dispute, or refuse to surrender. A prayer book carried through exile, a school established by displaced families, minutes recording an institution's difficult decisions, or a song taught to children after language loss is evidence not simply of content but of commitment.
Preferences can be expressed in a questionnaire; commitments often become legible only through costly choices. Culture provides evidence of how values operate under constraint: scarcity, migration, persecution, mortality, institutional conflict, and intergenerational obligation.
Lithuanian cultural history offers repeated examples of transmission under constraint. The knygnešiai maintained a printed language in the face of imperial restriction; displaced persons and later diaspora generations recreated newspapers, schools, parishes, scouting organizations, and civic associations outside an occupied homeland. These institutions transmitted far more than facts. They embodied judgments about language, freedom, faith, belonging, duty, and what future generations should inherit.
Their value lies in connections: a book's ownership mark, a teacher's name, a parish bulletin, a child's participation, an institution's decision, a later public controversy. No one artifact contains the full account.
Be Valančiaus parapijų tinklo — nebūtų knygnešių. Be knygnešių — nebūtų raštingos tautos, kuri 1918 m. atkūrė valstybę. Be tos valstybės mokytojų — nebūtų DP stovyklų mokyklų. Be DP mokyklų — nebūtų Detroito „Žiburio“.
Kiekviena grandis laikė tą, kuri ėjo po jos. Nė vienas daiktas neneša viso pasakojimo: knygos įrašas, mokytojo vardas, parapijos biuletenis, vaiko dalyvavimas, įstaigos sprendimas.
How do human communities create and sustain obligations across generations, and can AI systems recognize those obligations without converting them into generic preferences?
Our work begins with Lithuanian cultural memory. The questions it addresses are universal.
Mūsų darbas prasideda nuo lietuviškos atminties. Klausimai, kuriuos jis kelia, yra visų.
Every generation inherits more than the knowledge it can acquire for itself. It inherits languages, institutions, traditions, relationships, and ways of understanding the world that have developed over centuries.
This accumulated inheritance makes human civilization possible.
But inheritance is never automatic. It depends on people willing to preserve what came before them, understand its meaning, and carry it into circumstances their predecessors could not have imagined.
Lithuanian history offers an extraordinary example of this responsibility. Across occupation, displacement, and generations of life beyond the homeland, cultural continuity was sustained through the deliberate work of individuals and communities.
Today, artificial intelligence is transforming the ways knowledge is produced, encountered, and transmitted. This makes the preservation of authentic cultural sources, their contexts, and the human institutions responsible for them more important—not less.
Žiburio Foundation was established on the conviction that cultural memory is essential infrastructure for human intelligence and that responsibility for its future must remain in human hands.
Be kalbos nėra tautos.
